The Second International Symposium on Marine Microplastic Pollution and Control

The second International Symposium on Marine Microplastic Pollution and Control, organized by the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research (SKLEC),
East China Normal University (ECNU), UNESCO IOC/WESTPAC and the State Oceanic Administration of China (SOA), will be held on 24-25 April 2018, in Shanghai, China.

ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM

Micro-sized plastic debris, often referred to as "Microplastics"(<5mm), have become a growing global concern. Microplastics may originate from weathered remnants of larger plastic pieces (secondary MPs) and manufactured micro-sized plastic products (primary MPs), such as plastic nurdles, microbeads in cosmetics and cleaning agents, industrial shot-blasting abrasives and synthetic fibres. Having been recovered throughout the world's oceans from the Arctic to the Antarctic and found in samples taken from sea surface, shoreline to the seafloor, the minute Microplastics have become ubiquitous in marine environment. The omnipresence of MPs renders ingestion of MPs unavoidable for marine organisms, and can cause sub-lethal physical injury, accumulation of chemical contaminants (including both additives and reversibly sorbed waterborne pollutants) within the body and the toxicity to ultimately be transferred to the upper trophic level (including humans). Although Microplastics in marine environment have been reported in literatures since the 1970s, many questions remain unanswered.

In September 2016, the Shanghai Municipal People's government, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the East China Normal University jointly held the first Symposium on pollution and control of marine micro-plastics in Shanghai, as part of the Oriental Science and Technology Forum Series. As a continuation of the first symposium, we organize the Second Symposium and invite the leading scientists in this field to discuss this issue.

This symposium aims to discuss four key topics related to Marine Microplastic Pollution:

- Occurrence and fate of microplastics in the marine environment

- Interaction of microplastics with biological and chemical contaminants

- Influences of microplastics on the marine biota

- Citizen science and possible solutions / remediation measures for marine microplastics
